TOM MORRIS

When a British interior designer turns to his own textile inheritance, the result is neither nostalgia nor pastiche. CLOTH is LAYERED’s first collection rooted in the weaving traditions of the British Isles: six flatweave wool rugs designed by Tom Morris and interpreted through Scandinavian craftsmanship.

ABOUT TOM MORRIS

Tom Morris is an interior designer and director of the H&G Top 100 London-based firm Morrisstudio. Craft is at the studio’s core. There is a natural attraction to creating homes with a story — defined by the handmade and individual — rather than interest in just style alone.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the quiet beauty of traditional British textiles. They carry generations of craftsmanship, and I wanted to reinterpret that heritage in a way that felt contemporary rather than nostalgic.”

Racing Stripe in Margarine, Betty Brown and Cooper Green draws instead on the English stripe, from Savile Row tailoring to the deckchair and the racecourse. The palette echoes the British countryside and coastline, where muted tones are broken by decisive graphic lines.

Morris’s design ethos is rooted in modernism, exploring clean lines, symmetry and geometric patterns through intentionally contrasting colourways. The palette has been carefully selected as an ode to the North Wales coastline, echoing the hues of the natural landscape. Rich, muted tones are deliberately offset by bold graphic lines and patterns, creating statement rugs that lend a calm, grounding presence to any room.

Ryg in Dandelion, Olwen Blue and Bardsey Green takes its cue from Welsh blankets, carthenni, woven since the eighteenth century and traditionally given as wedding presents before being handed down through the family.

The rugs are woven on a pitloom, one of the oldest hand looms there is, partly sunk into the floor. The weaver guides the warp with their feet while their hands press each row tightly into place, producing an exceptionally dense weave with a low profile. The straight stripes called for specialised adjustments to the process to keep the lines crisp.
