Postcard from Athens
When LAYERED introduced its first collections, one piece stood out for its distinct materiality. With its deep, unbrushed pile, the Shaggy rug became a tactile counterpoint to the restrained Scandinavian aesthetic. In the reissue of Shaggy Mocha Melange, we return to the origins of the craft to continue its story.
The Greek flokati carries a lineage rooted in utility, once crafted to withstand the harsh winters of the Greek highlands. After its peak in 1960s and 70s interiors, the technique largely disappeared from contemporary design. LAYERED’s reintroduction of the quality focuses on this heritage, allowing the rug’s expansive texture to serve as a soft, organic layer within a minimal aesthetic.

To this day, the methods remain unchanged, though the process has been refined for precision. Once the undyed wool has been hand-knotted, each rug is submerged in rushing, ice-cold water within man-made waterfalls designed to replicate the natural mountain streams. The force of the falling water, the low temperatures, and the constant friction cause the wool fibers to expand and soften—achieving the signature volume of a LAYERED Shaggy through elemental power rather than mechanical intervention.

The collection was photographed at 10AM LOFTS — a former industrial warehouse in Athens repurposed as a multidisciplinary space housing a café, a curated store, and a boutique guesthouse. Within this brutalist setting of raw concrete and expansive natural light, a striking visual tension emerges. Just as the Shaggy rug once softened the strict lines of early Scandinavian interiors, it now brings warmth and tactility to this pared-back environment. It underscores the versatility of the craft: how an ancient textile tradition can inhabit a contemporary space and instantly add depth, character, and life.

”Shaggy is deeply connected to the early journey of LAYERED. It demonstrates how an authentic craft can bring both life and dynamism to a contemporary interior. Returning to Greece with Shaggy feels like connecting our own history with its ancient heritage. Here, the integrity of the material and the force of nature are allowed to speak for themselves.”
